Come see the best in queer comedic talent at Homo Night in Canada, 10 years strong. Hosted by the fabulous B-Girlz, this evening of hilarious high-schticking features Kristen Becker, Cocky (Ted Morris, Stephen Sharpe & Doug Taylor), Ian Lynch, Vong Sundara, David Tomlinson, and more surprise guests! All proceeds go to support Temba House (a South African hospice) and Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
"Dyke March is not a parade - it is a political demonstration of critical mass; a moment seized to revel in the strength, diversity and passion of LGBTTIQQ2SA women and trans folk."
Pride Toronto website.
We couldn't agree more. We want to continue pursuing these vital goals. Join us as we TAKE BACK THE DYKE by conducting our own march at the same time (Saturday, July 3rd @ 2pm, meeting at Nathan Phillips Square) keeping the aforementioned tenets in tact. It is going to be FIERCE.
* Pride's Dyke March, which spans only a few major intersections and one large street (http://www.pridetoronto.com/festival/dyke-march/) is not a march—it's a concession.
* Pride Toronto should not have the privilege of trumpeting our politics when they are silencing our voices and those of our colleagues and friends (http://orvillelloyddouglas.wordpress.com/2010/04/18/controversy-in-torontos-lgbt-community-about-a-space-for-marginalized-people/, http://queersagainstapartheid.org/).
* Relocating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, 2 spirited women, trans folk and their allies to the "wonderful new venue" in Queen's Park is too far away from all the action. More importantly, this decision was made without consulting the communities most directly involved.
We will march, scream, strut, sign, chant, roll and dance our way through the city streets. We will have excellent slogans and chants, creative banners, costumes, and other mind-bending spectacles. In many cities the Dyke March has never operated with a permit, intentionally positioning itself as separate from the corporate sponsored/censored Pride events. It is clear from the press conference rationalizing its censorship of QuAIA that Pride Toronto is bowing to corporate sponsors and homophobic politicians who have nothing but money at the heart of their interests. We don't need money to be proud. We are dykes. All we need is a can of lentils and some sunscreen. If you have experience marshalling, postering, sign making, cheerleading, organizing, or yelling contact the administrators here. If you don't have this experience, we will train you in all of the above. We are recruiting! It is time to reclaim our march.
Response has been amazing, friends—thank you all so much! For those of you asking about getting involved before the big day, here are a few options we have so far:
To be part of the Wheatpasting Brigade, contact Pike at pike.krpan@gmail.com
For Radical Queerleading Boot Camp contact Amy at torontoradicalqueerleaders@gmail.com
We will be posting more jobs (marshalling, sign making, medics, papier mache) with the contact information in the coming weeks.
The Pride & Remembrance RUN is an annual 5K fundraising run/walk kicking off Pride Weekend. The RUN has become an annual tradition promoting and fostering community spirit, goodwill, volunteerism and sportsmanship in the LGBT community. This year's RUN will be raising funds for Fife House, The Pride and Remembrance Foundation and the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies.
Following last year’s jam packed CHERRY BOMB Dyke Day Afterparty, CB returns to Revival and invites you to go deep and feel the love at this sexy two-floor affair. Featured artists include DJ Ritu (BBC Radio, UK), a pioneering specialist in Bollywood, bhangra and 'world' sounds, Toronto’s DJ Amita of Besharam, local house music vocalist and producer PIP, Cherry Bomb DJs Cozmic Cat and Denise Benson. CHERRY BOMB is a fun, flirty, dance-your-ass-off inclusive event for queer women and our friends.
Since 2004, the Dyke March has culminated with an afternoon of programming entitled Dyke Day Afternoon. Now in its 6th year, 2010 will see the largest and most exciting Dyke Day yet, taking place on the newest and largest stage of the ever-expanding Pride Toronto site. Hosted by Proud FM's Deb Pearce and now running throughout the afternoon and into the evening, 2010's performances include Vancouver-based musical comedienne Kate Reid, Haligonian electro-experimentalists Ruby Jean & The Thoughtful Bees, the rock/pop/punk trio 8 Inch Betsy from Chicago, New York-based vocal and violin stylist Bitch, as well as international star Cyndi Lauper. From Toronto, Saidah Baba Talibah, Hunter Valentine, The Cliks, Dragonette, DJ Betti Forde and Kishy La Roux.
1:00PM - Kate Reid
Kate Reid has burst onto the Canadian music scene with a knack for candid storytelling and songs filled with hilarity and clever social commentary. Whether she's singing about shaving her legs to avoid being shot for wildlife in her red-neck small town or eagerly blurting out her phone number to the sexy co-op cashier who is actually requesting her membership number, her material is as original and hysterically funny as can be. This year marks the release of her sophomore album, ‘I'm Just Warming Up' in the fall. Keep your eyes on this emerging artist, she's going to do big things.
1:45PM - Hunter Valentine
Go in, nail 'em and go home exhausted. Such a simple victory has been the mission of rock bands for decades. It's a noble pursuit; a Do It Yourself mentality that compels musicians to obliterate with powerful songs propelled by live passion and vitality.
That's Hunter Valentine.
Blasting out their inimitable rock since the summer of 2004, Hunter Valentine has blossomed, establishing a devoted fan base via their self-financed eponymous 2005 EP and building on that foundation with their 2007 full-length The Impatient Romantic (True North Records). Razing crowds from coast to coast in their decrepit van, nailing select European and U.S. Cities over the course of 200-plus shows, the trio has garnered an international fan base as they build out of their native Canada. Hunter Valentine are now poised to break through with their gripping follow up Lessons From the Late Night (Tommy Boy/Fontana/Universal).
Raucous and direct, the outfit comprised of vocalist/guitarist Kiyomi McCloskey, bassist Adrienne Lloyd and drummer Laura Petracca exemplifies girls with a united goal, intense friendship, respect and ability that solidifies their edgy albeit refined music. There's no hyperbole when it comes to Hunter Valentine. Everything has a direct message, delivered with a devout refusal for glitz or glamour. The hard line says it all, conveyed by confident, unbridled rock 'n' roll.
2:45PM - 8 Inch Betsy
8 Inch Betsy is a Chicago-based rock/pop/punk trio. They focus intensely on lyric driven rock that gets your irish up, can bring you down to earth and get stuck in your head for days. In September of 2005 they played Estrojam (a music and culture-fest in Chicago) where they shared the stage with The Organ and Amy Ray and the Volunteers. In October of that year they opened several shows for Amy Ray on her Rocktober tour with the Volunteers. Since that time they have played festivals and shows at venues all over the U.S, toured the west coast, south, and east, signed a record label for 2008, and self-released two EP's and a full length album titled "This Time Last Time Every Time". Touring to support their album through 2008 and 2009 and making so many new friends around the country has left 8 Inch Betsy feeling ecstatic and hungry for more. Recently they have teamed up with 307 Knox Records to record their sophomore album, "The Mean Days", due out in spring 2010. 8 Inch Betsy has been linked to the Queercore scene and has played with artists such as: The Gossip, Bitch+TEC, Tender Forever, Marnie Stern, Jucifer, Team Gina, and Athens Boys Choir, to name a few. While the members identify as queer, the music itself claims no label. They also like Mexican food.
3:30PM - Bitch
Bitch's musical journey has taken her from classical-violin training in the suburbs to experimental flicks in NYC. After leaving the outskirts of Detroit for the artier charms of Chicago—Bitch's unconventional and outspoken approach to performance caught the attention of a number of indie luminaries. She took fiddling lessons with Andrew Bird, serendipitously stumbled upon future co-conspirator, Animal at acting school, moved to New York to make their own 'theater' (Bitch and Animal) and recorded and toured with Ani DiFranco (who released Bitch and Animal's records on Righteous Babe). This association yielded an international following, introducing the world to Bitch's left-of-center and controversial brand of performance.
Bitch's out-of-the-ordinary message resonated with a generation of gender non-conformists, attracting the likes of New York theater legend John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), who tapped her star power for his Cannes Fest favorite, Shortbus. The runaway success of that film introduced Bitch to a wider audience. She went on to release her first solo album on the legendary Kill Rock Stars label, entitled Make This/Break This, a record that charted rockier terrain and earned her critical success. The tour that followed helped establish her reputation as an energetic, powerhouse performer, whose live shows mixed strong vocal prowess with a penchant for idiosyncratic musical instruments. (Bitch plays electric violin, ukulele and bass.)
In 2008, Bitch set out independently, launching her own record label, Short Story Records, along with a side project, Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion. She also found time to produce an album for critically acclaimed, Canadian songwriter, poet and folk hero, Ferron and released it on Short Story. Bitch added musical performances by Ani DiFranco, Samantha Parton from Be Good Tanyas, JD Samson (Le Tigre) and the Indigo Girls, which helped introduced Ferron to a younger generation of new fans.
Bitch's latest record, Blasted! (release date spring 2010), is an outgrowth of that newfound creative spirit, a real labor of love and her strongest solo album to date. The melodies are catchy and haunting and the lyrics unflinchingly honest. Bitch plays electric violin like a rock guitar, and adds layers of unique instrumentation to create a sonic symphony. Blasted! is fully self-produced and will be released with money raised by Bitch's loyal fan base. With Blasted!, Bitch continues to push the envelope with her wild-spirited avant-garde "theatrical punk” sound and has produced her most listenable and enjoyable album to date.
Blasted! is self-produced and is funded completely by Bitch's loyal fan-base.
4:30PM - The Cliks
It has been said that every generation needs a new revolution. Lucas Silveira's revolution began with a fearless attitude that embraced radical change. Lucas founded The Cliks in 2004 when his musical identity shifted from being a solitary singer/songwriter to an all out rock n' roll front man. This shift reflected a vision he had carried his entire life and had now found a vehicle for. After six years, two major record label releases (Snakehouse 2006/Dirty King 2009), international successes, multiple line up changes, major tours (True Colors 2007/2008, The Cult 2007/2008), TV appearances, awards (MTV Logo New Now Next Artist On The Brink, Chart Attack Pole 2009- Sexiest Man In Canda), breaking societal boundaries, and praise from his musical peers, (Cyndi Lauper, Margaret Cho, and The Cult's Ian Astbury), it became clear that the only constant in The Cliks was Lucas. His courageous attitude, rock star energy and progressive approach to self-determination has created an ever changing musical identity that encourages all outsiders to feel a sense of connection, belonging and mutual respect between audience and performer.
Unphased by life's transitions and struggles, Lucas has forged ahead by continuing to fulfill the vision of The Cliks.
Now traveling with a variety of guest performers, Lucas spearheads The Cliks' with the kind of attitude, grit and raw energy that has been compared to Green Day's Billie Joe, Joan Jett and Chrissie Hinde of The Pretenders.
When you come to see The Cliks, you don't just come to see a rock band. You come to see a social and musical movement in progress.
5:30PM - Saidah Baba Talibah
Born and raised in Canada, Saidah Baba Talibah attended Claude Watson School for the Arts in Toronto, where she received formal training as a dancer and minored in visual arts and music. At 19, she entered the professional music theatre world as part of the Toronto touring cast of Showboat, and eventually won roles in several other smash hits. Since then, she's accomplished a myriad of artistic projects, such as being a featured vocalist at the Quincy Jones Gala, teaching singing and songwriting to youth, providing backup vocals for several of Canada's Hip-Hop and R&B artists, and being a member of the Canadian Idol backing band. Most recently, she's been touring Canada with multi-platinum selling country singer, Johnny Reid.
6:30PM - Ruby Jean & The Thoughtful Bees
Ruby Jean shows are ecstatic. Rebekah Higgs, the first horsewoman of the apocalypse, throws herself both figuratively and literally into the seething, sweating, dancing masses before her. The bruises she incurs while crowd surfing, moshing and hurling herself unto the audience are unfelt until she wakes up calm and hung-over in Rebekah Higgs' bed, remembering little of Ruby Jean until she sees a Youtube video of herself doing seven costume changes and pouring a bottle of champagne into a guy's mouth from the stage.
The audacity of their live presence won the Bees some damned impressive shows and festivals before they even released their 2009 eponymous album. They've opened for Dragonette, Kid Koala, Thunderheist, and they recently tore the UK a new one on a trip there to play The Great Escape in Brighton.
7:30PM - Dragonette
Juno nominated Dragonette return to the Pride Toronto festival and this time open for Cyndi Lauper. In 2008 Dragonette collaborated with Lauper on the track ‘Grab a Hold' for her ‘Bring Ya to the Brink'. The next year they released ‘Fixing to Thrill' much to the adoration of all of us. The album garnered interest from Kaskade and Martin Solveig, who they've collaborated with since then. They've also opened up for the highly respected Basement Jaxx and Sugababes. We can't wait to see what they do next!
9:00PM - Cyndi Lauper
An unwavering advocate for queer rights, Cyndi Lauper established herself as a household name with the 1983 single "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," kicking off a long career with more than $25 million in record sales, 13 Grammy nominations, 2 Emmys, 2 American Music Awards, 7 American Video Awards, and 18 MTV Awards. Her album "Bring Ya To The Brink" affirmed her international pop diva status, even more so amongst her queer fans, who were featured prominently in the music video for her #1 single, "Into The Nightlife” and her new album, ‘Memphis Blues' gives us something to look forward to. Lauper also recently joined Lady Gaga as a spokesperson for the 2010 MAC Viva Glam Campaign, which was established in 1994 to support people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS around the world.
10:30PM - Betti Forde
Betti Forde has been deejaying for a decade and is one of Canada's most popular and sought-after DJs. She's toured internationally since 2003 and has rocked the world's hottest club nights including Boombox in London and White Nights in Paris. In her previous hometown of Vancouver she's been hand-picked to open for Diplo, CSS, Chromeo, Keoki, Blowfly, Felix da Housecat, Peaches, Lady Miss Kier (Dee-lite) and Derrick Carter. In Toronto you'll find her Saturdays at the Barn and Thursdays at Andy Poolhall. A true party-rocker, she takes the party from house to hip-hop, disco to electro, retro to futuristic, but her true individuality as a DJ lies with her eclectic and impeccable taste in music and her intense presence and ability to connect with her crowd. Betti also loves to sing, rap and bust into the splits, so she's one-third of the critically acclaimed electro/hiphop outfit StinkMitt, who have played with everyone from the Gossip to Crystal Castles, recorded with Peaches, licensed tracks to the L-word, and changed the face of music forever. When Betti's not rocking the party, she has her head buried in books as she pursues a PHD at York University.
DJing throughout the day by Kishy La Roux.
In a short time, DJ Kishy La Roux has established herself as one of Toronto's DJ's to look out for. Native to Ottawa, KLR came to Toronto in
2007 with the intention of breaking into the dj scene, and that's exactly what she's done. Mentored by Church Street darling and veteran, DJ Delicious, she has been able to craft a one of a kind sound being one of the first DJ's to bring Dutch house music to the village. Her residencies include ‘Dirty Bingo' at Slack's, ‘StraightGirl' at Straight and ‘Everyone's A DJ' at Voglie.
Finish your Dyke Day festivities with a night of dancing. Enjoy the comfort of a dance in a roomy hotel setting, steps from all the action. Finger foods will be served, cash bar, live DJ. All women welcome! 19+/Wheelchair Accessible

OSPCA ringworm investigation?? (June 16, 2010) – A not so happy anniversary to the Ontario SPCA. It has been a month since the society abruptly shut the doors to its York Region shelter and began euthanizing animals in its care.
May 10th the society confirmed 6 people and 350 animals had been infected by a virulent, aggressive type of ringworm. CEO Kate MacDonald described the situation as "a tremendous public health issue".
Ringworm is a fungal infection.
Despite promising to do so by May 28, the OSPCA has yet to announce who has been selected to conduct the investigation into an epidemic the society admits was caused by human error and a breakdown in shelter protocol. Information on what steps have been undertaken to sanitize the building have not been made public.
Protesters continue to gather daily in front of the Newmarket OSPCA demanding the society divulge the condition of all animals in its possession on May 10, 2010.
· 99 animals were "humanely euthanized" due to ringworm.
· 3 dogs were "humanely euthanized" for "posing a physical threat to other animals and people".
· 23 dogs were relocated for "up to a month" for "further testing".
· 91 cats were relocated for "up to a month" for "further testing".
· 15 animals were "stolen".
· 15 animals "not affected by the outbreak are in isolation in a portable structure on the site".
· 96 animals were "fostered out to other accredited agencies, clinics, shelters and institutions capable of caring for them in isolation from other animals".
· 8 animals unknown. ("lucky" ringworm free turtles?)
June 1st, MPP Frank Klees tabled a motion calling for an independent investigation and legislative reform to enact effective provincial oversight over the OSPCA. Download copies of the petition, instructions and the motion at www.frankklees.com or www.ospcatruth.com.
A rally to commemorate the slain animals and to demand legislative change will take place July 10th at Queen's Park.

For this week's pre-Caribana celebration it was obvious we needed to invite Nik Red back to play and we're very lucky that he'll be joined by DJ Blackcat!!!!
Luckily the Gladstone is air conditioned cuz it's going to be one hot and sweaty dance floor.
10pm. Always free.

This is a dance party for EVERYONE (uh...19+ of course). Bring your friends, your Mom, your neighbour. Gay, straight, guys, girls, and everyone who doesn't believe in a binary system of gender and sexuality. Everyone who wants to have a good time is welcome.
As usual, hosted by Shane MacKinnon and Kaleb Robertson. We have joked that we play the Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton roles in the party, but since Lilo's in jail we may have to switch things up a bit.
Hope to see you on the dance floor!!!!
