CFCF | Paper Bag Records, Acephale, Montreal

Michael Silver (aka CFCF) is one of those rare talents to whom pop sensibility seems to be second nature. The Montreal native has been making music in his bedroom since he was 12 years old, but it’s only over the past year or so that the rest of the world has been able to share in his pop experiments. Despite having just exited his teenage years, CFCF has a musical depth that constantly surprises his elders with influences ranging from Jellybean and Pete Rock to Todd Rundgren and Fleetwood Mac. This wide scope of interest in genre and pop structure and mature melodic instinct allow him to shift gears effortlessly from Italo to Disco to Balearic to Piano House and everything in between. His pop music can be sweetly melancholy or creepily disturbing, but it is always fundamentally Pop.

Having first caught tastemakers’ attention with his contest winning remix of Crystal Castles “Air War,” CFCF has gone on to produce official remixes for talents such as Sally Shapiro, The Presets, HEALTH, The Teenagers and Hearts Revolution among many others. For the past couple of years he has honed his fluid, eclectic and always fun DJ sets at his weekly residency with Montreal’s Saturday mainstay, Dance Dance Dance. He’s also been busy with his own productions and the next couple of months will see releases through Acéphale and Paper Bag Records.

THE GLITCH MOB

The Glitch Mob is a three man musical collaboration with roots from San Francisco and Los Angeles. What initially started as a joke/loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Boreta, and Ooah found themselves frequently playing the same shows and eventually tag teaming during back to back time slots.

Taking influences from hip-hop, experimental, and dance genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted their own form of futuristic dance floor hip-hop that has been slaying audiences world wide. Their live sets reinvent the DJ ‘tag-team’ concept with three performers on stage at once, interacting like a jazz combo, each taking the lead at intuitive moments, interweaving their own sounds, and remixing everything on the fly. The result is a sound distinctly their own, blending the deep head nod of hip-hop with serious bass music, throwing genre distinctions out the window.

The Glitch Mob has been one of the cornerstones of this new electronic hip-hop movement that has emerged from Glasgow to Montreal and back to Los Angeles. Taking a nod from the resurgence in the instrumental hip-hop ‘beats’ movement, the Glitch Mob have injected a great sense of dance floor sensibility into the scene and crafted their own niche as new school dance floor destroyers.

The Glitch Mob are set to blow up in 2010, with appearances scheduled for SXSW, Coachella and the release of their first full-length album. Don’t miss The Glitch Mob live on Tuesday May 4 at Wrongbar.

Wednesday's Reloaded
Wednesday May 5, 2010

Slack's is bringing you something different for your hump day! Starting this week, every Wednesday you can come unwind after work with $5 appetizers, $7 mini pitchers of Keith's, and episodes of the L Word on our big screen.

Are you single and looking to gain a friend or more? Stop by from 7pm til 9pm for SINGLES MINGLE. We'll have Slack's bracelets for you to slip on if you're interested in meeting someone new, and we'll be playing a different lesbian-themed movie on our big screen every week. Slack's will also be hosting speed dating on the 4th Wednesday of every month.

Already found that special someone? Stop by for a romantic dinner and a movie at one of our cozy tables.

Afterward, Dirty Bingo closes out the night with the always-entertaining Captain Morgan and the sounds of DJ Kishy La Roux, who were recently voted the duo most likely to convince you to take your shirt off on stage. Never a dull moment when Morgan's on the mic!

So, remember, Wednesdays @ Slacks:

STRIP SPELLING BEE
Thursday May 6, 2010

Sign-up at 8:30
Bee starts at 9PM
$10 at the door

18+

Please note that we must cap our number of strip-spellers at 15 to ensure an expedient and entertaining evening.

***

The game is played a lot like strip poker, but it's a spelling bee, and it's played in front of a live audience of hooters, hollerers and hecklers who want to see some smart and sexy skin!

Here are the official rules.

One by one, participants are asked to spell a word. If they get it right, they sit down. If they get it wrong, they must striptease A THIRD of their clothing off, and that is considered their first "strike". When they misspell a second word, that is their second strike and they must striptease ANOTHER third off. A third and final strike requires that they strip down to their underwear. Or, NAKED - whichever they are most comfortable with.

After three strikes, a participant is out of the competition. But they should take heart – because while they may have lost, the audience has most certainly won.

The winner of the Bee takes home (a) a bottle of wine; (b) a CD with recordings of over an hour of cats purring loudly; and (c) a DVD with over an hour of my friend sleeping in a sexy tank top.

Best striptease will also take home (a) a bottle of wine; (b) a CD with recordings of over an hour of cats purring loudly; and (c) a DVD with over an hour of my friend sleeping in a sexy tank top.

All striptease spellers do not pay cover.
Anyone can drop out of the competition at any time AFTER the completion of the SECOND round.

This is a queer, senior and trans-friendly event. We have a NO BOOING policy strictly in effect. No photos are allowed except by our Official Photographer. Our goal is to have everyone feel safe, secure and comfortable enough to strip and spell.

Regarding the No Photos Rule - we also have a Snitch Policy. If you are a member of the audience and you witness someone taking a surreptitious photo, BY ALL MEANS, interrupt the proceedings, come up to one of the hosts - SNITCH on the guilty party, and once they have been dealt with, you will be rewarded with a free drink.

We thank you for your patronage and understanding.

We're Funny That Way queer comedy festival - IAN HARVIE
Thursday May 13, 2010

We're Funny That Way queer comedy festival

IAN HARVIE - One Show Only!

9:30pm - Chamber

Los Angeles based transgender funnyman Ian Harvie has headlined clubs, colleges, and festivals all over the world.

With equal parts candor and deadpan humour, Ian's distinctive matter-of-fact delivery and almost surreal anecdotes about the intricacies of his exceptional life are so full of humanity that they become universal. Ian's observations about gender-specific societal codes, privilege, coming out twice, and of course, learning new bathroom etiquette, will have you peeing in your pants as well as wanting to check your neighbour's pants to see what's inside.

Ian's not just a queer comedian - he's the world's first FTM transgendered comic - which, when put in context, make his anecdotes about his own phobia of public restrooms all the more side-splitting. Ian's performance makes you think, makes you wonder, but most importantly, it makes you laugh.

A Life of Fighting
Sunday May 23, 2010

"A Life of Fighting"

from book of saints:
"i am made of iron, iron maiden bleeder
keep back keep back keep back 100 metres
i will not martyr i will not martyr
i made you monsters i can hit you harder "

- veda hille

Join us for a night of scrappy performers and songwriters, boxing demos, riotous life, as your MC Sasha Van Bon Bon, band Tomboyfriend, Veda Hille and the Toronto News Girls toasts the grace and the ache of a life of fighting, in a celebratory pinch:

There will be jokes. There will be large dance numbers. There will be gorgeous music. There will be fisticuffs.

PWYC ****
All performers will be donating their take of the night to the Toronto News Girls! So pay what you can generously. They are fund raising, and they are awesome. Keep reading to see what they do.

Others who have equally kindly commented upon our doings have said as follows: "A performance art whirlwind," - Eye. "A more brilliant New Pornographers," - Playground. “What nerdcore kids get down to on the dancefloor,” - NOW. "A more-left-wing Hidden Cameras with a crazy fun Keith Cole aesthetic," - Fab. "When Don’t Go to School does come out I think I’m going to crank my stereo, hit repeat, and tell my parents they don’t understand me—just for old times sake," - This magazine. Toronto Rally for stronger animal abuse laws
Sunday May 30, 2010

Early last week in Windsor there was a dog named Tyson who's owner Ajalo Abeywickrema, 51 sexually mutilated his dog by putting a condom around the dogs penis and tied it off with a rubber tube- the dog unfortunately had to be euthanised due to the extent of the injuries. This is only one of many cases in Ontario.

Last Saturday we held a protest in Windsor Ont, and close to 1000 were in attendance with their pets.

SUNDAY MAY 30th! we are rallying at Queens Park in Toronto at 12NOON until 3:30pm. We want Toronto to see that Bill C229 is important. We are asking everyone who attends to wear red, we encourage you to bring your pets, friends, family, loved ones.

The laws for animals cruelty have not been looked at for over 100 years. We are planning to take this all the way to Ottawa. We need change. Together we can make this change possible. This rally is for supporting Bill C229.

There will be petitions circulating at the event, for those who cannot attend please sign the petition online; http://www.petitiononline.com/ths0708/petition.html

Please forward this event to your contact list on your Facebook. start spreading the word.

Hope to see you out supporting this great cause.

Toronto musicians including Laura Barrett and Matt Murphy provide the live soundtrack to this momentous event.

The event is a reading and a celebration. All proceeds go to The Actors' Fund of Canada (actorsfund.ca.) With over 10,000 professional members, The Actors' Fund provides emergency financial aid to assist cultural workers in recovering from an illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship.

Brecht's play pushes beyond the story of Galileo that we all know – that of a great scientist prosecuted by the ignorant Church and nobly recanting in order to write his 'world-changing masterwork' in secret – to question the legend that has emerged around this controversial figure. Completed after the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Brecht's Life of Galileo lays bare the notion of scientific research and progress 'for its own sake'. It proposes a social and ethical responsibility for scientists and intellectuals that remains radical in these days of venture capital science and economic justifications. Forcefully asking what the role of the intellectual and thinker is in relation to power and the status quo, Life of Galileo stands as a vitally important drama.

"In these times, it's easy to back away from big plays and big ideas," says Jacob Zimmer, Artistic Director of Small Wooden Shoe. "Through the presentation of this new translation, with this truly remarkable cast and the incomparable Tracy Wright, we grapple with and re-imagine our theatrical and scientific traditions, and approach Brecht and Galileo for what they might tell us now, about our lives today." In this new translation by Birgit Schreyer Duarte with Zimmer and directed by Zimmer with Associate Artist (and Buddies in Bad Times Theatre Artistic Director) Brendan Healy, Life of Galileo thrills and excites with its examination, reflection and provocation on contemporary issues of authority.

Co-founder of the Augusta Company (with Daniel Brooks and Don McKellar), collaborator with Nadia Ross's STO Union and Jacob Wren's PME-ART, Tracy Wright has been a muse and performer for many film and theatre makers including Daniel MacIvor (A Beautiful View, You Are Here and new film Trigger, directed by Bruce McDonald), Miranda July (You, Me and Everyone We Know) and Don McKeller (Last Night, Twitch City, Blindness, Child Star). Wright is a magnetic and powerful performer, bringing forth one of the most complex, challenging and powerful roles in modern theatre.
