Upcoming local queer and lesbian events in Toronto
Below is our listing of local lesbian events in Toronto for April. These Toronto queer women events have something for everyone, and are updated on a regular basis by someone who lives in Toronto.
Designer Drugs (Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson) lead lifestyles of the rich and famous, but are really just poor boys who love helicopters and pop banger music…and a few other things that will not be noted. Currently, Designer Drugs is releasing new material with Iheartcomix Records. They’ve also been found partying on the couch at the Iheartcomix office.
With one member attending med school and the other drinking whiskey across the globe, to keep from going crazy last year – the DD boys produced over 23 remixes and DJ’d over 100 shows around the world. This year, to keep from going crazy, Designer Drugs is putting the focus on original material while continuing to tour the galaxy and party harder than ever.
Most recently, Designer Drugs released their single “ZOMBIES! / Back Up In This” on Iheartcomix Records with Remixes by Nadastrom, Don Rimini, Le Castle Vania and Bird Peterson. Designer Drugs has also completed remixes for labels such as Kitsune, Dim Mak, Fools Gold, Warner Brothers, Ministry Of Sound, Hail Social, Iamsound, Etc Etc, Coco Machette and Calamity Jane for artists such as Little Boots, The Veronicas, Thieves Like Us, Treasure Fingers, Mariah Carey, Jupiter One, Heart’s Revolution, Mission Control, Hail Social, and IAMX.
Both members of Designer Drugs are mentally controlled by ELLE REX (www.ellerex.net), photographer of NYC’s sleaziest and most entertaining electro party – RUFF CLUB. You can find her tagging along to shows, documenting the debauchery that ensues when DD takes the decks. What will happen next? You haven’t partied until you’ve partied with Designer Drugs!
When Couples Become Parents: The Creation of Gender in Transition to Parenthood
by Bonnie Fox
7pm
we regret our washroom is not wheelchair accessible.
all our events and courses are trans inclusive.
When couples make the journey through their first year of parenthood they confront the challenges of their new responsibilities with varying degrees of support and a range of personal resources. When Couples Become Parents examines the ways in which divisions based on gender both evolve and are challenged by heterosexual couples from late pregnancy through early parenthood.
Following the experiences of forty heterosexual couples in various socio-economic positions, Bonnie Fox traces the intricate interplay of social and material resources in the negotiations that occur between partners, the resulting divisions of paid and unpaid work in their families, and the dynamics in their relationships. Exploring the diverse reactions of these women and men, When Couples Become Parents provides significant insights into the early stages of parenthood, the limitations of nuclear families, and the gender inequalities that often develop with parenthood.
Bonnie Fox is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto.

After a North American run last fall with a sold out show at Wrongbar that left fans and critics clamoring for more, MIIKE SNOW returns to for another show at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre on Saturday, April 3, 2010.
Although MIIKE SNOW was born in Stockholm in 2007, the group is actually made up of New York City-based songwriter Andrew Wyatt and Swedes Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg. Karlsson and Winnberg's backgrounds in the DJ scene and punk bands alongside experiments in progressive electro and new rave led to a series of writing/producing stints with Madonna, Kelis, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears — culminating with a Grammy win for Best Dance Recording with her song "Toxic".
MIIKE SNOW'S self titled debut is a full band collaboration, showcasing their deft mastery of the studio while acknowledging each members unique talent for songwriting, production, arrangement and performance. Recorded in Stockholm in the 400 year old home used to house King Gustaf III’s mistress, MIIKE SNOW bristles with confidence. It’s intelligent pop music that has the ability to cradle taste making purists and reach anthemic heights. Showcasing melodic songs built for the anything goes environment of the club, MIIKE SNOW will make anonymity an impossibility.
MIIKE SNOW'S sound is instantly accessible and its pop synths, slick guitar riffs and tender lyrics make the group a perfect fit for a party.
Don’t miss MIIKE SNOW live at The Phoenix on Saturday, April 3, 2009 followed by the exclusive afterparty with an exclusive DJ SET by MIIKE SNOW at Wrongbar!
IT'S GOING TO GET MESSY on SATURDAY with DJ Ychuck.

Washed Out is Ernest Greene, a young guy from Georgia (via South Carolina) who makes bedroom synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard.
There’s a sense of longing and distance in Greene’s somber, filtered vocals, but it’s what he does compositionally that makes Washed Out stand out. Backed by gently pulsing, Balearic-tinged disco, Greene’s voice takes on a new dimension. Reminiscent of groups like The Glass and the Chromatics, Washed Out is the music to end your night with, when the city is quiet and the walk home, long.
After disappearing into the attic of Uncle Matt’s house on Long Island for a long winter with their casios & samplers, Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner emerged with pop songs melding strange beats, dreamy synths, tape hiss & laid-back melodies. Teaming up with longtime collaborators Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin, the band fleshed out the bedroom sound for live performance, combining a full drum kit with sampled drums, live bass, keyboards and samplers. After tearing through nine shows in under a week for CMJ, the band was asked to play in a wide range of places, from small art spaces to big venues and everything in between.
Described by Pitchfork as “absurdly addictive” and “soul-stirring,” Small Black released their self-titled EP on CassClub on October 13th. After completing a split 7-inch remix project with Washed Out (out soon on Lovepump United), as well as a UK single for “Despicable Dogs” (out now on Transparent), the band is gearing up to finish the full LP in an empty house in Delaware over the next few months.
Don’t miss Washed Out & Small Black live at Wrongbar on April 7, 2010!
By "popular demand" The Trans Inclusion Group hosts a FREE screening of "Kinky Boots" – Thursday Apr.8th 6pm.
About the Night:
Are you feeling nice and airy from spring weather?
Are you looking for an excuse to procrastinate from school/exams?
Are you looking for candy and smiles?
Are you scared of what these questions may be asking?
. . . then plan to attend the next trans film night: the sugar, sweet and fluffy edition!
Join us to watch "Kinky Boots" – a comedy (gasp!). Plan to show up, relax, and indulge in sweets (maybe even laugh a little). Simple.
About The Film:
Charles Price may have grown up with his father in the family shoe business, but he never thought that he would take his father's place. Yet, the untimely death of his father places him in that position, left to take on a failing, traditional, old-men, shoe business. What could possibly revive the business? Perhaps the flamboyant drag queen cabaret singer, Lola can show them how it’s done with some trans-entrepreneurialism! Her complaints about the inadequate footwear for her work leads to a suggestion to change the product to create a desperate chance to save the business: make men's fetish footwear (you know, diversify the product). Lola is convinced to be their footwear designer and the transition begins. Now this disparate lot must struggle at this unorthodox idea while dealing both the prejudice of the staff, Lola's discomfort in the small town and the selfish manipulation of people without vision. Imagine fetishism footwear’s power. Kinky Boots is a British comedy (and borderline cult classic) based on the real-life story of the Northamptonshire shoe company "Divine".
Or maybe the film will make you think through the politics of trans identities and capitalism’s commodification practices, maybe you think through labour movements and the historical exclusion of sex workers as workers, maybe you will think through how to complicate the narrative of stepping into a father’s "shoes", etc. – but you don’t have to – it will be a fun, pressure-free, no expectations evening. Still, if the popcorn inspires a critical awareness do share it!
Starting dreaming of popcorn, oreos, sugar cookies, coffee cake, macaroni, rice krispies squares – all vegan. Or bring your own social snack-creation to share (but no need; its a no pressure night). Arrive early and play some yahtzee.
Come join us for a fun filled event featuring these four fabulous bands:
Charge of the Light Brigade
The Fantasy Defender
The State of Things
Evil Farm Children

Door Prizes, Booze and Rollergirls!!

Sleigh Bells are just a duo -- Derek on beat production, guitars, and songwriting; Alexis Krauss on vocals -- but their tracks ram together many sonic worlds. Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss have come out of nowhere to form the outfit on everyone's CMJ breakout list. But there are roots, dug deep and spread far: Past members of Sleigh Bells went on to form buzz-band Surfer Blood. Derek's old hardcore band Poison The Well toured with Give Up The Ghost, the defunct hardcore outfit of Cold Cave's Wes Eisold. Alexis Krauss is a school teacher with a pop-singer past. All of which gives certain strength to their reinvention in this excellent new outfit.
Believe the hype. Sleigh Bells recently signed to MIA's new label imprint, NEET Recordings and will taking a break off the Major Lazer tour to debut tracks off their forthcoming album at Wrongbar!

HOT CHIP | DJ Set
Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was released by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London's resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution, Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle -- nearly subliminal -- pulse-like techno beats, acoustic guitars, and plinky pianos, but the vocals were the true star of the show (no small feat in a musical climate overrun with disaffected Lou Reed-esque mumblers and bland Eddie Vedder impersonators). The voices of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard are a fine study in contrast. Taylor offers dreamy, effortless falsettos that cut to the heart of the beauty of performers like Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake (minus any of the pretentiousness of Radiohead or even Coldplay or the bland vocal acrobatics of Remy Zero). Meanwhile, scattered throughout the record (and in the occasional duet), Goddard offers a tone that sounds a bit more world-weary and at times almost gruff in comparison to Taylor, calling to mind Damon Albarn's cool monotone tendencies. 2002's self-released Sanfrandisco E-Pee showed the band dabbling in more playful sounds, from the beatbox dubbing of the title track to the closing notes of "Fanta," in which Taylor pleads with the listener to "make sounds of the summer." There are moments of gorgeous melancholy as well, but on the whole the album feels a bit more hopeful than Mexico had. The group signed to revered N.Y.C. record label DFA in 2005 and released the Over and Over EP, as well as the excellent 2006 release The Warning. Hot Chip kept busy in 2007 by supporting The Warning with singles and consistent touring, and released a DJ Kicks mix album. Late that year, the single Ready for the Floor heralded the arrival of Made in the Dark, which featured some of the band's most focused grooves and poppiest melodies to date.

'Sub Rosa' Book Launch at This Ain't the Rosedale Library!!
Come out for an intimate night of readings as Amber Dawn travels from Vancouver to launch her debut novel 'Sub Rosa' (Arsenal Pulp Press) — a speculative fiction narrative about an underground society of ghosts and magicians, missing girls and amnesiatic sweethearts: a place called Sub Rosa… happening on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 8 p.m.
Debra Anderson will also read from a work-in-progress and share some Toronto love.
"Amber Dawn's 'Sub Rosa' is a masterpiece of imagination. It's haunting, chilling at points and then just so sweet. Her writing is stealthy and seductive, wise and witty and clever. Lock Mary Gaitskill in a closet with Francesca Lia Block and they might emerge with a map to 'Sub Rosa': a glorious mystery that creeps you out and then totally enchants."
—Michelle Tea, author of 'Valencia' and 'Rose of No Man's Land'
8 p.m.
Authors will have books for sale and be available for book signings.
