reply to kinney 05-11-2006 10:29 Forum: Random rants

hi kinney
that was my first forum blurb- I didn't know I was responding to a whole whack of stuff about the diva den? That being said, Of course it is more complicated - each scenario will inevitably be - but if there was an equal amount of safe spaces for all I figure there would be less disruption if people could wrap thier heads around allowing for everyone to have an opportunity of space. beleive me I have had my share of being on the outskirts and being opted out of venues and such due to identity politics, and I don't agree with it - But I can always take a atep back and know that there are some who are identifying within that place that I have been rejected from who need to have that exclusion for thier safety. I respect that everyone has rights despite the fact that it is inconvenient for me, and at times outright insulting. My point of my rant last night was simply to note that there will not be agreement ever if we are such a diverse community because diversity means that we will differ - and people are directly opposed to eachother within our community. I suggested that if there were a sense within the community that all were getting thier own equal status/spotlight/space/time/money - simply consideration, then there might be less of the dogs all trying to get the same bone...but the rainbow alphabet heirarchy of the GLBTTQQIA (or whatever acronym you embrace) has a tell-tale power distribution showing who are the dominating classes within the underclass. As it stands I think there is still a need to fight for trans inclusion, because without it there are a discriminatingly small amount of resources and community for trans persons - however If there was as much natural conclusion into some venues where trans persons were respected then they would stop fighting to have a piece of someone else's pie. For the record - this is very challenging to spit out online - I work better in person, and I don't know if I am clear...but hey, I guess I have to catch up with technology. cheers

trans inclusion 05-10-2006 22:45 Forum: Random rants

Ther is never going to be a single conclusion that will satisfy all members of our community as we exist in a diverse community and therefore diversity allows for members in the community to hold oppoing ideas. One of the main problems is that there is no agreement in the first place about gender or spectrum means and so people are arguing about things that they think they have a common idea about, but in reality, there are differentiating personal definitions of what gender means and involves so people are arguing about different topics.
What there can be is an aim towards accomodation and consideration of all in rotation - allowing for everyone to have thier spaces adjusted to different inclusion - that way all will receive a shared space, and allow for thier other members in the community to have thier spaces - embracing true diversity.
I don't like spaces that exclude, however they are necessary for people to find and understand thier current selves. I am not particularly wanting to have spaces that oppose my veiws - but to deny them would mean being greedy and not allowing other members of the community to have thier rights to disagree with me. I think that respecting diversity means even that of which we disagree or dispise. We can use a single space and have events on different occations that purposely allow for multiplicities of self definition.Ok - let's simplify...one bar for instance can hold different evenings of the same event - one evening can be for bio-women only, another night can be for queer women - or persons with personal female/women history in whatever defined way....and so on. I think that it is time that our community stands behind it's embraced rainbow and accepts that there is room for all, and that means there is room for internal argument within the community. It isn't pretty - but it is reality. There is definately need for trans inclusion - I know it, I live it - but there are people who's experiences are such that thier life and personal needs are divorced from embracing trans inclusion for whatever reason - and everyone has a right to have a space that is comfortable - though the spaces of comfort that are available are unequally distributed, and there is still definately a dominant class within our community - a hierarchy of politics really. I am not saying that any one cause is more important - I am saying that the need for all of us to have a safe space is real - and there is a need that those safe space become more equally distributed - share and be fair, think of the needs of our community first before personal causes and share the wealth with those at the bottom of the rainbow heirarchy!
