What is this?
Superdyke.com is an online community website I created in August 2000. It was originally intended as an online space to host queer women-friendly events local to where I was living at the time - Vancouver, BC, Canada. As my interest in the web, social media and web development skills grew, Superdyke morphed into the online community that it is today.
Members can sign-up for a free account which allows them to create, search and browse other member profiles, respond to profiles, interact with other users through a messaging system, upload photos, see who’s online, and find local queer event information. In addition to the main site, users can browse message boards/forums and create their own personal blog.
It has always been important to me that Superdyke remain financially accessible for its members. Basic accounts are free and allow users to browse member profiles, send and receive unlimited messages, and interact with other users. Premium accounts exist to unlock ’special’ features within the site and are seen more as a donation than a necessity.
After living nearly 7 years in Vancouver, I embarked on an adventure that took me first to Nunavut and finally to Toronto, ON. I currently reside in Toronto but still remain faithfully connected to the Vancouver queer scene. Since being in Toronto, Superdyke has launched local events for Toronto, the Atlantic provinces, Edmonton, and Montreal. Without the help of volunteers in each of these cities who collect and enter event information, this would not be possible.
This blog is intended as a central space for behind the scenes Superdyke-related information such as feature/website updates and news.
I’m a queer activist; a gender-bending androgynous dyke; a webgeek; a rugby player. I work full-time as a Web Producer for The Man and run Superdyke on the side.
